With this season so much worse than any other second tier campaign this century, I have extended the comparison out to include every such campaign since 1988 when the Second Division was first expanded to 24 teams. If nothing else, it gives those of us old enough to remember those days a chance to reminisce!
As can be seen, defeat at Millwall means that this campaign remains the joint worse start to a second tier season in Albion’s history along with 1994/95. Alan Buckley’s team lost 1-0 at Watford in game 16 with Tommy Mooney scoring the only goal of the game.
Worryingly, the 1990/91 team that started the campaign under Brian Talbot had seven more points at the stage but ended up being relegated to Division Three. The same can be said for the 1999/2000 season which ended up with Gary Megson saving the day as they survived by three points.
