Albion’s Second Tier Season Comparison – 16 games

The first 45 minutes of the match against Norwich City produced more goals than we had seen in the first seven games of the campaign with Albion doubling their home goals tally for the season. With no further goals in the second half, the Baggies had to settle for a point which extends their unbeaten run to eight matches and was enough to keep them in the top six with more than a third of the season now completed.

Eight matches without defeat matches is still two short of longest unbeaten run under Carlos Corberán, achieved between February and April this year. It was Sunderland that ended Corberán’s run earlier this year when they won at the Hawthorns, and Albion travel to the Stadium of Light on Tuesday to face the league leaders.

Josh Maja’s fine finish was his tenth goal of the season while Mason Holgate’s clever flick was his first and he became only the fifth Albion player to score in the Championship this season.

Two goals conceded means that the Baggies have now conceded three in the first eight home games which matches the club record at this stage. Three previous Albion sides have matched that achievement, in 1907, 1914 and most recently in 1997 when Ray Harford’s team sat in third place at this stage of the campaign. The Baggies’ overall record of eleven goals conceded is not quite a club record, but it is the fewest conceded in the first sixteen league games of a campaign since 1948 when Jack Smith’s team let in just nine goals, equalling the club record set in 1905.
