The first game under caretaker boss Richard Beale produced Albion’s first win in ten games and their first away win since the 1-0 victory at the same venue in April. Ignoring Darren Moore and Jimmy Shan whose spells in charge of the side were extended, it was the first win under a caretaker managed since Keith Downing took charge of a 1-0 victory over Newcastle United on New Year’s Day 2014, one of six matches he oversaw between the spells of Alan Irvine and Pepe Mel.
It was just the third league game of the campaign in which the Baggies have scored first, and they have avoided defeat in all three, beating Hull City and drawing with Norwich City in the other two.
The thee points means that this season’s team remain a point better off than the club’s worst ever start in the second tier in 1994. In that campaign, new boss Alan Buckley also registered his first victory by the same 2-0 scoreline and against the same opponents. 28 years ago, it was in the Black Country rather than Berkshire and the scorers were Andy Hunt and Lee Ashcroft.
