Albion’s Second Tier Season Comparison – 13 games

Another draw for the Baggies extends their winless run to seven games, but also extends their unbeaten run to five.

This run of five consecutive league draws equals a club record that has happened on six previous occasions, but never before in the 21st century. The last occurrence was in 1999 when Brian Little’s team drew seven of their opening nine games of the campaign, winning the other two – games five to nine were all drawn while game ten was a 1-0 home defeat to Walsall! In 1967/68, Albion recorded six consecutive draws for the only time, a run that included two draws in the FA Cup sixth round tie against Liverpool.

Josh Maja’s cheeky nutmeg back-heel at Kenilworth Road was his first in six games and moved him onto eight goals for the season, two behind the Championship’s top scorer, Borja Sainz. Only four players have scored for the Baggies in the league this season with Jayson Molumby, Alex Mowatt and Karlan Grant the other three.

Corberán’s team has conceded only eight goals in the opening thirteen games which equals a club record set in 1905 – no Albion side has ever conceded fewer goals at this stage.

The Baggies’ next game will be only the 65th Albion game to have been played on a Thursday and, of those, thirty have been played around the Christmas and New Year holiday period. Of the remainder, eleven have been cup ties including eight replays. When fixtures were moved for complete TV coverage during COVID, Albion played two Premier League fixtures on a Thursday.

The last Thursday league game for the Baggies that was neither during the holiday period or COVID was away to Arsenal in April 2016. Before that, you have to go back to the days of On Digital when Gary Megson’s team played two games on Thursdays in October 2001, losing to Millwall and drawing with Wolves, both at the Hawthorns.
