Albion’s Second Tier Season Comparison – 12 games

A third goalless draw of the season for the Baggies leaves them in ninth place with seventeen points, just two points off the top six.

The only time this century that an Albion side had fewer points from their opening dozen games was last season, when Steve Bruce’s team had just ten points at the same stage. Bruce would be sacked after their next game and if the Baggies can repeat their points tally from the remainder of last season, they would finish with 73 points which should be enough for the top six.

Saturday’s result does mean that the Baggies have recorded five clean sheets in the last seven games and only five Championship teams have let in fewer than the fourteen that Albion have conceded in this Championship campaign.

Looking ahead to game 13, Albion hosted QPR in the same match of the 1998/99 season and won 2-0 thanks to goals from Mickey Evans and Shaun Murphy in front of less than 12,000 spectators. Denis Smith was in the home dugout that season while his opposite number was Gerry Francis – Francis had just taken over at Loftus Road from Denis Smith’s predecessor, Ray Harford, with the west London club bottom of Division One.

Game 13 has been unlucky for the Baggies in their last five Championship campaigns having not won it since Ishmael Miller and Kevin Phillips earned them a home win over Norwich City in 2007.
