Albion’s Second Tier Season Comparison – 12 games

Albion were left frustrated once again as they recorded their fourth successive draw to extend their winless run to six games. They remain inside the top six, however, but are now eight points behind leaders Sunderland.

Corberán’s side are certainly proving difficult to score against this season, particularly at the Hawthorns. The Baggies have only twice previously conceded as few as two goals in their opening six home league games of a campaign, and this season they have let in only one, a new club record.

It is only the eighth time in the club’s history that an Albion side has registered six clean sheets in the opening dozen games, and none has recorded more shut-outs at this stage. The last team to record six was Tony Pulis’ 2015 team. Furthermore, it is only the third time in the club’s history that the team has conceded as few as seven goals from their opening twelve games, the most recent being Don Howe’s 1974 team. No Albion side has had a better defensive record at this stage.

Conversely, goalscoring is a distinct problem this season, particularly at home. Only once before has an Albion side scored only twice in their opening six home games – in 1921, the Throstles failed to score in any of their first five home games before earning a 2-2 draw in game six, ironically against Cardiff City. The last time that an Albion side scored less than thirteen goals in the first dozen games of a non-Premier League campaign was in 2000, but that side, under Gary Megson, still managed to reach the play-offs.

Saturday saw the Baggies’ fourth goalless draw of the season, which is the most any Albion side has recorded from twelve games. They have had three nil-nils in the first twelve games on five previous occasions, including last season.
