Albion’s Second Tier Season Comparison – 10 games

A 1-0 victory over Sheffield Wednesday saw Albion record a third successive clean sheet since November last year and back-to-back victories for the first time since April. The three points moved the Baggies into the top five of the Championship for the first time since February.

The result also extends Albion’s unbeaten run to five games, which is the longest run since Corberán’s team went six games without defeat from the victory over Bristol City on Boxing Day last year until the FA Cup defeat away to the same club a month later. The last time the Baggies went five league games unbeaten was the run of games from Corberán’s first victory as Albion boss against Blackpool in November last year until his first defeat at Coventry City just before Christmas. The Baggies haven’t had a longer unbeaten league run since they were undefeated for the first ten games of the 2021/22 season.

Game 11 in Albion’s recent second tier history has produced some notable results, not least a 4-1 victory at St Andrew’s in October 1988 when former Blues man Robert Hopkins scored twice in two first half minutes with Stewart Phillips and Bryan’s younger brother, Gary Robson, adding goals in the second half. Eighteen years later, Nigel Pearson was in caretaker charge of the Baggies as they romped to victory at Portman Road – a brace from “Joe” Kamara and a hat trick from Super Kevin Phillips earned the visitors a 5-1 victory.
