A hat trick from Josh Maja earned Albion all three points on their opening day fixture at QPR. It was Maja’s first hattrick in English football although he did notch two hattricks for Bordeaux during his time in France, most recently against Paris FC in March 2022.
It was the first hattrick by an Albion player for more than five years – Dwight Gayle was the last to score three in one game for the Baggies, doing so against Preston in April 2019 having also scored three at Rotherham United the previous December. It is only the third opening day hat trick by an Baggies player, and the first for 111 years when Alf Bentley scored all four goals in a 4-1 win over Burnley at the Hawthorns in September 1913. Albert Lewis also scored an opening day hattrick against Burnley nine years earlier in another 4-1 win, this time at Turf Moor, in 1904.
It is also the first time that an Albion player has led the divisional scoring charts since Berahino’s opening day double against Sunderland in 2014 saw him briefly lead the Premier League scorers chart after the opening weekend.
