Albion’s Second Tier Comparison – 46 games

It was always a long shot and, with Sunderland’s 3-0 victory at Preston North End, the Baggies would have needed a six goal margin of victory at Swansea in order to claim a top six spot.

In the end, Joël Piroe’s last minute winner means that the Baggies finished with fewer points that they did last season, albeit a place higher in 9th, to make it their worst second tier points tally of the 21st century. However, when you look at the relative points per game record for the three permanent managers from the last two season, the incumbent comes out clearly on top. Carlos Corberán has earned 1.73 points per game from his 30 matches in charge while Valérien Ismaël comes in second with 1.55 ppg for 29 games while Steve Bruce is languishing in third place with just 1.1 ppg from his 30 games. If you extrapolate Corberán’s performance over a full season, the Baggies would have finished on 79 points in third spot.

A few other interesting statistics for the season. Brandon Thomas-Asante was the overall top scorer with 9 goals, 7 of which were in the Championship. That made him the joint top league marksman with Daryl Dike although the American had a better strike rate of a goal every 172 minutes compared to BTA’s 272 minutes. Kyle Bartley was a surprise third in that metric with his two goals coming at a rate of a goal every 330 minutes.

John Swift had the most goal involvements with his seven goals and ten assists for the season in all competitions putting him clear of Jed Wallace who had six goals and eight assists, BTA with his nine goals alone and Jayson Molumby who had four of each.

Jed Wallace was the only player to start every league game during the campaign although Conor Townsend featured in every one coming off the bench on just two occasions. John Swift was the only other player to feature in every Championship matchday squad, starting 38 matches and making 7 substitute appearances. The only match that he didn’t feature in was the 2-0 win at Reading under Richard Beale. The only other players to make more than 30 league starts were Darnell Furlong (38), Dara O’Shea (37) who had played every minute until his injury, Okay Yokuşlu (34) and Jayson Molumby (31).

Taylor Gardner-Hickman made the most appearances off the bench with 20 with Tom Rogić (16) and Adam Reach (15) making up the top three. Meanwhile John Swift was the player withdrawn most frequently having been replaced 24 times ahead of Jayson Molumby (17) and Okay Yokuşlu (13).
