Albion’s victory over Queen’s Park Rangers on Friday evening not only put the Baggies back on top of the table, albeit briefly, but also equalled the club record unbeaten start to a league campaign of nine matches. It is a record that was also matched by Slaven Bilić’s team two seasons ago and Ismaël’s team have the chance to set a new all-time club record by avoiding defeat at Cardiff City on Tuesday evening.
This season’s tally of 19 points from 9 games has only been bettered once this century, by Roberto di Matteo’s team of 12 years ago, and on only nine occasions in total has an Albion side had a better start to a season. The best of those was Vic Buckingham’s “Team of the Century” who had the equivalent of 23 points from the opening nine games of the 1953/54 campaign culminating in a 7-3 at St James’s Park, Newcastle, a stunning victory that included a hat trick by Johnny Nicholls and a brace from Ronnie Allen.
