Albion’s Promotion Challenge Season Comparison – 6 games

Albion came back from two goals down to earn a point at the John Smith’s Stadium, and it perhaps could have been three had it not been for what Steve Bruce described as “the worst penalty decision I’ve ever seen”. Not sure about that, Brucie, but it certainly was fairly blatant. It leaves Albion in a disappointing 15th place in the take with just seven points from their opening six games.

Again we have to go back to the 1994/95 season for the last time Albion had fewer than seven points from their opening six games in a second tier campaign. Burkinshaw’s side found themselves bottom of the table with just four points from six games following a 1-1 draw at home to Grimsby Town when former Baggie, Craig Shakespeare, scored for the Mariners who were managed by future Albion boss, Alan Buckley – he would replace Keith Burkinshaw when he was sacked a few weeks later.

Looking ahead to Tuesday night, only twice have Albion lost game seven of a second tier campaign this century, but one of those was away to Wigan Athletic in September 2003 when future Baggie, Geoff Horsfield, scored the only goal of the game. That Baggies have drawn game seven in each of their last three second tier campaigns with their last victory coming in 2009 when a rare brace from Jonas Olsson and another goal from Chris Wood secured Roberto di Matteo’s team a 3-1 win over Doncaster Rovers to keep them top of the Championship table.
