Albion finally secured their first league win of the season at the fifth attempt, and did so in style with five goals against the previously unbeaten Hull City. It moved the Baggies into 13th place although Bristol City’s victory over Cardiff City means they were down to 14th by Sunday evening.
It’s the first time that Albion have scored five goals in a game since the 5-2 win at Stamford Bridge in April 2021 and the first time there have been five different goalscorers for the Baggies since the Matheus Pereira-inspired 5-1 victory over Swansea City in December 2019 when the mercurial Brazilian was joined on the scoresheet by Semi Ajayi, Hal Robson-Kanu, Matt Phillips and Kyle Edwards.
Game 6 has been a successful one for the Baggies in second tier campaigns this century producing six wins and three draws albeit just the one win away from the Hawthorns, 2-1 at Watford in 2001 thanks to a brace by Scott Dobie. Last season, the 1-1 draw with Millwall moved Albion to the top of the table but was, perhaps, a first sign that clubs were beginning to work out how to counter Val-ball.
