A 94th minute winner from Semi Ajayi made it four successive victories for the Baggies for the first time since December 2019 when Pereira’s masterclass against Swansea City helped them record their sixth win in a row.
No Albion side has ever started a league season with five straight wins which means that Ismaël’s side have matched the club’s best ever opening five games. The last Baggies team to start with four wins and a draw was Ossie Ardiles’ side from 1992 – four straight wins was followed by a 1-1 draw at Fulham in game five.
The class of 2021 are in good company with the three other sides to start this well being Vic Buckingham’s “Team of the Century” of 1953, the 1932 side that ended up in fourth place in the top flight just two seasons after winning promotion and the 1947 side who ultimately missed out on promotion in that campaign, but would return to the top flight in 1949.
