A first ever home league victory over Rotherham United moved the Baggies to 80 points with one game to go.
The Baggies have never failed to be promoted with such a high points total at the end of the season in any of their promotion campaigns dating back to their first in 1901/02, even converting all the pre-1981 totals to three-points-for-a-win.
Taking the number of games played into consideration, there have been three occasions, all in the first decade of the 20th century, when an average higher 1.74 points per game, which would be this season’s total should Albion lose at Derby, has not resulted in promotion. In those season, Albion finished 4th twice and 3rd when only the top two clubs were promoted.
As a matter of interest, Albion’s highest ever points-per-game total when converting to the 3-point format was in their first ever promotion campaign. In 1901/02, the Baggies were champions in their first season in Division Two winning 25 and drawing 5 of their 34 games, an average of 2.35 points per game by today’s points system.
