The Baggies avoided a fourth straight defeat but they still failed to score so extended their scoreless run to four games.
That run was matched in the league by Slaven Bilić’s team either side of lockdown in 2020 when they failed to score against Wigan Athletic, Swansea City, Birmingham City and Brentford, although that run was punctuated by a 3-2 defeat to Newcastle United in the FA Cup.
The last run of four consecutive games without a goal in all competitions was towards the end of the 2016/17 campaign when Tony Pulis’s side drew blanks against Manchester United, Watford, Southampton, Liverpool and Leicester City, a run of five matches that is a club record equalled on four other occasions.
This season’s team are eight points worse off than any of the other 21st century Albion second tier sides with the teams of 2002, 2008 and 2019 all having 54 points after 31 games. The goal tally of 34 is also the lowest with even Gary Megson’s 2001/02 side having scored one more goal at this stage, and they are also the only team to have conceded fewer goals having let in 23 compared to this campaign’s 26 goals.
