A late and very controversial penalty saw Albion take all three points at Deepdale and return to the top of the Championship. Charlie Austin converted it to make it three goals in his three substitute appearances since he was dropped to the bench.
It is also five successive victories for the Baggies for the first time since March 2010. Tony Mowbray’s side won six on the bounce in 2007, although two of those games were in the FA Cup, and Albion haven’t won six successive league games since April 2004.
They are still some way short of the club record of 11 successive league victories, although that did span two seasons as they finished the 1929/30 season with seven victories and opened the following campaign with four more.
Slaven Bilić’s side are four points better off than any of the Baggies 21st century promotion challengers, but they remain behind the pace set by Vic Buckingham’s 1953 team – they won fourteen of their first nineteen games (scoring an incredible 53 goals!) and had the equivalent of 44 points.
Looking back at the game 20 fixtures from previous promotion campaigns, the one that stands out is the 3-0 win at Forest in 2003 when Jason Koumas scored one of the goals of the season – here’s the YouTube link for those that want to relive it!
