The Baggies lose their 18th game of a 21st century campaign for the first time, but more importantly for this season’s chances of promotion, it is their fourth successive defeat on the road and it leaves them eight points adrift of the automatic promotion places.
It is the first time that Albion have lost four successive away league games in the second tier since Tony Mowbray lost his first four Championship away matches after taking over from caretaker boss, Nigel Pearson, in October 2006. That left the Baggies in 10th place after 20 games although only eight points off automatic promotion – that season, they finished 4th and lost the play off final to Derby County.
Only three times have Albion had fewer points from 18 games in their 21st century promotion campaigns, and on each occasion they failed to win automatic promotion. Gary Megson’s 2001 team also had 32 points and managed to make the top two thanks to a remarkable second half of the season.
