After a late penalty denied Albion the three points in their last home game, this time it worked in the Baggies’ favour as Charlie Austin fired home the 88th minute spot kick to earn all three points.
It remains Albion’s best start to a season since 1953 when Vic Buckingham’s Team of the Century would have had 41 points from 17 games had it been three points for a win.
There is now a five point gap between the Baggies and third placed, Preston, following their defeat. Forest could move to within four points of the top should they win their game in hand, but it’s nice to see a little separation developing.
Game 18 has been very good for Albion in recent tier two campaigns as only once have they failed to take all three points, a 0-0 draw with Reading in 2003. Wednesday evening’s game with Bristol City will be the first game 18 at the Hawthorns since goals from Jason Koumas, Nathan Ellington and Darren Carter helped Albion to a 3-0 win over Burnley in 2006.
