Valérien Ismaël’s Albion fell to their second defeat of the season at Swansea but the start to this campaign is still the joint fourth best of the century. In the second tier, Megson’s 2003/04 team had 28 points at this stage and Slaven Bilić’s side had 26 while Steve Clarke’s 2012/13 side found themselves 3rd in the Premier League after 13 games with 25 points following a run of four consecutive victories.
In the club’s history, the start to this campaign has been bettered on just eleven occasions when applying three points for a win with the best record achieved by Vic Buckingham’s Team of the Century of 1953/54 who had the equivalent of 32 points from their opening baker’s dozen.
Looking back over the recent promotion campaigns, game 14 hasn’t been too successful with just one victory achieved. That was, however, a real statement victory as Tony Mowbray’s side went to league leaders, Watford, in November 2007 and thumped them 3-0 with a dominant performance – Kevin Phillips is pictured above celebrating his goal, Albion’s second, with Zoltán Gera. As is often the case in the Championship, the early pace setters fell away and Adie Boothroyd’s team just about scraped into the play-offs that season where they were hammered by eventual play-off winners, Hull City.
