Albion’s Premier League Season Comparison – 38 games

A final day 3-1 defeat makes 2020/21 Albion’s worst ever Premier League season level on points with 2002/03 but with an inferior goal difference.

Only once have the Baggies won their final game in a Premier League season, beating Portsmouth in 2005 to complete the Great Escape which you can read about here.

There have been a couple of memorable draws, however, when Albion came back from three goals down on both occasions. In 2011, Roy Hodgson’s side found themselves 3-0 down at Alan Pardew’s Newcastle United just after halftime before Somen Tchoyi (pictured) wrote his name into Baggies folklore. It was “Tchoyi Story 3” as the Cameroonian scored a hat trick in the final half an hour to prevent the Toon from leapfrogging Albion in the table.

And then there was that game in 2013 – Sir Alex Ferguson’s final game as Manchester United was all going swimmingly for the Red Devils as they found themselves 5-2 up with less than ten minutes to go. Up stepped Youssouf Mulumbu to make it 5-3 and then Romelu Lukaku completed his hat trick with two further goals to make the final score 5-5. It was the Belgian’s final game for the Baggies before his return to his parent club, Chelsea, and that hat trick made him Albion’s highest scorer in a Premier League season with 17, a record that still stands today.
