Albion’s Premier League Season Comparison – 37 games

Only one former Albion side has had fewer points in the Premier League with one match to go – Gary Megson’s side in the Baggies’ first Premier League season had just 25 points from 37 games while the teams in 2005, 2009 and 2018 had 31 points and only the Great Escape in 2005 escaped relegation.

You can read more about the 1-1 draw at Manchester United that kept Bryan Robson’s side alive in my series on the Great Escape while the Baggies’ best game 37 result was in 2015 when Tony Pulis’s team surprisingly hammered the newly crowned champions, José Mourinho’s Chelsea,, 3-0 thanks to a brace from Saido Berahino and another goal from Chris Brunt.

In 2018, Jake Livermore’s stoppage time winner against Spurs kept Darren Moore’s Albion alive, albeit only for a few days.

Finally, going back to the Baggies’ worst ever season, 1985/86, Ron Saunders’s side drew 1-1 at the Hawthorns with Nottingham Forest in game 37. Dutchman, Johnny Metgod opened the scoring for the visitors before Martyn Bennett equalised for Albion.
