Albion’s Premier League Season Comparison – 35 games

Relegation for this season’s Baggies was finally confirmed with defeat at Arsenal, but three years ago, a 2-2 draw with Liverpool kept Darren Moore’s Albion alive a little longer, despite having fewer points that Allardyce’s team at the same stage.

In Albion’s worst ever season, 1985/86, game 35 saw Ron Saunders record his first victory as Albion boss as an Andy Thompson strike was enough to beat Chris Nicholl’s Southampton side at the Hawthorns despite the hosts having Martin Dickinson sent off. It moved the Baggies onto 21 points, but they were still well adrift at the bottom of the table and it looked like being a nightmare season for the West Midlands as Birmingham City and Aston Villa occupied the other two spots in the relegation zone.

In happier times, in May 2015, Chris Brunt’s free kick was deflected goalwards by Jonas Olsson (pictured) as Albion recorded back-to-back victories at Old Trafford for the first time since the 1950s.
