Albion’s Premier League Season Comparison – 34 games

Albion may have failed to register successive league doubles against Wolves, but the point means that the Baggies’ unbeaten record against their Black Country rivals will extend to beyond ten years, and their home unbeaten record to more than 25 years by the time the clubs meet again. That does, of course, assume that Albion don’t host Wolves again before 15th September, something that would seem highly unlikely given their current league position.

This season’s team is currently Albion’s third worst Premier League team with only the 02/03 and 17/18 teams having worse records at this stage. Big Dave’s team won 1-0 at Old Trafford in game 34 three years ago with Jay Rodriguez scoring the only goal (pictured) to secure a result that confirmed Manchester City as champions. Meanwhile, back in 2003, a Derek McInnes double earned three points for Megson’s Albion away to bottom club, Sunderland, but the club were relegated on the same day anyway as other results went against them.

In the first season at the Hawthorns, 1900/01, game 34 was the final match of the season and Frank Heaven’s side signed off with a 2-0 home defeat to Sheffield United to confirm a bottom-of-the-table finish with just 22 points, although that would have been 29 if it was 3 points for a win.

In 1985/86, Ron Saunders showed no sign of turning the Baggies’ fortunes around and another defeat, 1-0 at Ipswich with Terry Butcher scoring the only goal, left them 14 points behind the Tractor Boys who occupied the place immediately above the relegation zone.
