Albion’s Premier League Season Comparison – 30 games

I don’t think anyone in the football world saw that coming. Albion’s first win at Chelsea in the Premier League, their first win at Stamford Bridge since 1983 and their first at that venue in the league since 1978. Sam Allardyce also became the first Premier League manager to win at the Bridge with three different clubs.

It was also Thomas Tuchel’s first defeat as Blues’ boss, the first goals Chelsea had conceded for seven games and the Baggies join Liverpool and Manchester City as the only Premier League teams to win at the Bridge this season.

It had taken Albion nine games to score their previous five goals and, while it is a fantastic result, Big Sam’s team need another eight fantastic performances if they are to pull off a miracle – the odds remain heavily stacked against them.

In 2005, game 30 was similarly successful as they also won handsomely in the capital, 4-1 at Charlton Athletic on that occasion to put them on 24 points, three better than this season’s team at the same stage. Going back to 1986, Ron Saunders’ first game in charge saw Albion defeated once again, 3-0 at Old Trafford thanks to a Jesper Olsen hat trick, two of them from the spot.
