Albion’s Premier League Season Comparison – 29 games

Another defeat leaves this season’s Baggies at the bottom of their Premier League counterparts, two points behind 2017/18, and three points adrift of Albion’s first two Premier League campaigns.

Alan Pardew was still three games from the sack when they lost at Watford three years ago, their sixth successive defeat in all competitions, while game 29 in 1985/86, Albion’s worst ever season, proved to be Nobby Stiles’ last in charge.

The Baggies actually won that match, their first and only away win of the campaign at St Andrew’s completing the league double over Birmingham City. It moved them on to 16 points for the campaign, just two behind this season’s team. Ironically, Ron Saunders, the man who replaced Stiles, had started the season in charge of Blues before walking out after suffering a defeat in the FA Cup to non-league Altrincham a few weeks before this match with an agreement to take over at the Hawthorns. You do have to question why the Albion board thought that was a good idea!

In March 2017, Albion beat Arsenal 3-1 at the Hawthorns thanks to a brace from Craig Dawson and a rare Premier League goal from Hal Robson-Kanu. It was notable only because it was the Baggies last win of that season, their only one in the last twelve games of that campaign – it was a further warning that Pulis-ball was losing its edge but one that the Albion ball failed to heed and we all know what happened the following season.
