West Brom v West Ham United – History and Statistics

The head-to-head record between the Baggies and the Hammers stands at 41 wins apiece with Albion slightly ahead in terms of goals with 172 to 169. The league record is also level with 35 wins for each side, but the Hammers have scored one more goal in league meetings with 142 to the Baggies’ 141.

That suggests that the clubs are evenly matched but, while that may be the case when the clubs have met, Albion have spent 19 more seasons in the top flight than West Ham and the Hammers have just three FA Cup wins to their name, compared to the Baggies’ seven major domestic honours. The Irons have had the edge in recent years, however, having spent just four seasons outside the Premier League since its formation in 1992 and reaching the FA Cup final in 2006, something Albion haven’t done since 1968.

The Baggies’ last win over West Ham was in the FA Cup last January, a few weeks before lockdown, when Conor Townsend’s strike was enough to see Albion through to the fifth round. Their last victory at the Hawthorns was back in September 2016 when Nacer Chadli was in the “flattering to deceive” early phase of his Albion career scoring a brace in a 4-2 victory; Salomón Rondón (pictured) and James MacClean scored the Baggies’ other goals.

The Baggies led 3-0 at half time in that match, but the Hawthorns faithful were still concerned having led by the same scoreline against the same opposition in February 2011 thanks to early goals from Graham Dorrans and Jerome Thomas and an own goal from Winston Reid. With new boss, Roy Hodgson, given a watching brief from the stands, Michael Appleton’s side proceeded to concede three goals in the second half with Demba Ba scoring his second and the visitors’ third with seven minutes left.

In May 1985, it was Albion that flattered to deceive as they hammered the Hammers in their penultimate home game of the season with goals from Steve Hunt, Steve Mackenzie (2), Tony Grealish and Nicky Cross making the final score 5-1. They would, of course, be relegated the following season winning just four games all season.

The Baggies best win over West Ham was way back in October 1925 when Jo Carter (2), Stan Davies (3), Charlie Wilson and Tony Glidden all scored in a 7-1 victory. The Irons’ biggest win at the Hawthorns was somewhat more recent – as was usual under Tony Pulis, the 2015/16 season was drifting towards an unsatisfactory conclusion and a Kouyaté goal and a Mark Noble double saw them win 3-0 at the Shrine at the end of April, one of the nine winless games that concluded Albion’s campaign.
