Albion’s Premier League Season Comparison – 28 games

A goalless draw with Newcastle United is really not enough for the Baggies and, coupled with Fulham’s victory at Anfield, it leaves Sam Allardyce’s side as good as down. They are now eight points behind both Fulham and Brighton who are immediately above them, and still nine behind Newcastle. With just ten games to go, Albion will need a truly remarkable run of form to make up those points.

Robson’s Great Escape side secured a crucial victory over Birmingham City in game 28, to move them onto 21 points, three ahead of this season’s team. You can read more about that game in my Step Back in Time article.

Going back to Albion’s worst ever season, Nobby Stiles’ tenure at the Hawthorns was coming to an end. 1st February 1986 saw Albion at Maine Road and they looked to have grabbed a point when Tony Grealish levelled with ten minutes to go after Paul Power had given the hosts a first half lead. It wasn’t to be, however, and Gordon Davies scored a late winner for City to leave the Baggies still on 13 points, seven behind second-bottom Birmingham City and twelve behind Aston Villa in 19th, the first safe position.
