West Brom v Crystal Palace – History and Statistics

The history of this fixture goes back only just over 50 years to September 1969 when the Baggies won 3-1 on their first trip to Selhurst Park. The Eagles had been promoted to the top flight for the first time in the summer of ’69 and Albion completed the league double over the new boys in January 1970 thanks to a Jeff Astle hat-trick in a 3-2 victory.

Palace stayed in the top flight four season on their first visit, and earned their first victory on Albion soil in February 1973. A brace each from Alan Whittle and Derek Possee saw the visitors win 4-0, a result which remains their best at the Hawthorns.

Both sides were relegated that season with Palace dropping down to the third tier a season later. They did get back to Division One for a couple of seasons in the early eighties, but it wasn’t until Albion dropped into the second tier in 1986 that the clubs started to meet on a regular basis.

Albion achieved their biggest win over Palace back in April 1980 at the Hawthorns – a goal from John Trewick and a double from Peter Barnes earned the hosts a 3-0 win.

One memorable fixture was in Division Two in November 1988. A Don Goodman hat-trick had put the Baggies 3-1 up with 15 minutes left. Robert Hopkins made it 4-1 before Gavin Nebbeling pulled one back for Palace on 79 minutes. Albion’s first African player, John Paskin, made it 5-2 with just three minutes left but there was still time for Geoff Thomas to make the final score 5-3.

The Eagles had a couple of forays into the Premier League in the 90s but the clubs were both promoted in the summer of 2004 with Palace beating West Ham United in the play-off final. Iain Dowie’s team were, of course, one of the three sides that went down as Albion achieved the Great Escape the following season.

But, of course, the Baggies’ most famous match with Crystal Palace was a few of years earlier on 21st April 2002 when goals from Darren Moore (pictured) and Bob Taylor secured their first promotion to the Premier League.
