West Brom v Southampton – History and Statistics

Albion are currently on a dreadful run of results against Southampton having lost the last five meetings in all competitions, including a pair of defeats in 2018 when the Saints beat Pardew’s Albion in successive games at the Hawthorns in league and cup.

The Baggies last beat Southampton at St Mary’s on New Year’s Eve 2016 when Hal Robson-Kanu’s wonder strike secured the visitors a 2-1 win, while their last home win was the previous year thanks to a second minute goal from Saido Berahino (pictured).

In Albion’s first Premier League season, a Sean Gregan goal was enough to beat the Saints in September 2014 and move Gary Megson’s side to the heady heights of 7th place after three successive victories, although one win in their next seventeen league games saw the Baggies drop to the bottom of the table.

Before losing their last three at home to Southampton, Albion had lost just two of the previous seventeen encounters at the Hawthorns including a thumping 4-0 win in October 1979 when John Deehan, Gary Owen, Bryan Robson and Ally Brown were the scorers.

The Throstles’ biggest win over the Saints was in Division Two on the final day of the 1929/30 season. Albion left their promotion charge a little late finishing sixth after winning their last seven matches and scoring a remarkable nineteen goals in their last four. Five of those were against Southampton at the Hawthorns on 3rd May with top scorer Jimmy Cookson scoring four of them and Jimmy Edwards with the other in a 5-1 win.

Southampton’s best result at the Hawthorns was also in Division Two, a 3-0 win in February 1975. Saints legends Peter Osgood, Mick Channon and Bobby Stokes got the goals for Lawrie McMenemy’s side that would go on to win the FA Cup the following season, knocking Albion out in the process.
