West Brom v Sheffield United – History and Statistics

History

That Albion’s last home victory over the Blades is more than a decade ago is more a reflection of the fact that the clubs have only shared a division for one season since then than anything else, although both clubs have preferred to be away from home in this fixture over the last 20 years.

Since Albion’s 4-1 victory in August 1998 when Matt Carbon, Kevin Kilbane and Lee Hughes (2) got the goals, the Blades have won three of the seven meetings at the Shrine, losing just two, while the Baggies have recorded three wins at Bramall Lane in the same period.

It was an entertaining fixture during the Megson-Warnock years with all four games in the 2001/02 and 2003/04 campaigns finishing as away victories including, of course, the infamous Battle of Bramall Lane – the picture above is of Scott Dobie and Stuart McCall during the Blades’ 2-0 victory in October 2003.

Albion’s record league victory over Sheffield United is 4-0, a feat they have achieved twice, most recently in November 1987 when Andy Gray, Don Goodman, Bobby Williamson and Tony Morley were the scorers.

That was bettered in the FA Cup in 1935 when two of the Baggies’ top six record goalscorers were on target. Ginger Richardson (no. 3 on the list) bagged a hat trick while Joe Carter (no. 6) also scored. Teddy Sandford scored a brace while Arthur Gale was also on target as the Blades were beaten 7-1. The Steel City would get its revenge, however, as Wednesday beat Albion in the final a few months later.

United’s record win at the Hawthorns came on the opening day of the 1989/90 season when a brace from Tony Agana was added to by a late goal from Brian Deane as the visitors won 3-0. Dave Bassett’s side would go on to win promotion and Brian Deane would go on to score the Premier League’s first ever goal two years later.

This is the Blades’ fifth season in the Premier League although this will be the first meeting between the clubs in the competition, and the first top flight meeting since 1972/73.
