West Brom v Liverpool – History and Statistics

Albion are currently in the midst of a four match unbeaten run against last season’s Premier League champions. They earned their first point under Sam Allardyce at Anfield on Boxing Day and, in their last Premier League season, they drew 2-2 with the Reds at the Hawthorns under Darren Moore, earned a 0-0 draw at Anfield in the league earlier in the season and, of course, won 3-2 at the same venue in the FA Cup in what was undoubtedly the high point of Alan Pardew’s brief tenure as Baggies boss.

Such a run seemed impossible in Albion’s first few Premier League seasons. In fact, in the first nine games against Liverpool in the Premier League the Baggies failed to score losing all nine games conceding 25 goals in the process. That run was ended by a a 2-1 win at the Hawthorns in April 2011 thanks to a brace of penalties from Chris Brunt (pictured).

Just over a year later, Albion recorded their biggest win over Liverpool since the 1950s on the opening day of the 2012/13 season. A wonder goal from Zoltán Gera opened the scoring just before half time before a penalty from Peter Odemwingie and Romelu Lukaku’s first goal in Albion colours saw the hosts record a 3-0 victory.

The Baggies’ biggest win over the Reds was back in February 1936. Liverpool had beaten Albion 5-0 at Anfield the previous September, but the Baggies gained revenge at the Hawthorns in the return fixture winning 6-1 thanks to a hat trick from Ginger Richardson, a brace from Stan Wood and a goal from Jack Mahon.

Liverpool’s biggest win at the Hawthorns was in April 2003 when Michael Owen scored four and Milan Baroš grabbed a brace as the visitors ran out 6-0 winners. That made Owen the joint-highest goalscorer at the Hawthorns that season, level with Danny Dichio.
