West Brom v Fulham – History and Statistics

Albion are on a run of ten winless matches against Fulham dating back more than a decade to October 2010 when goals from Youssuf Mulumbu (pictured) and Marc-Antione Fortuné turned around an early lead for the visitors before half time. A shot from former Baggie, Zoltán Gera, hit the post and deflected in off Albion ‘keeper, Scott Carson, to give Fulham a ninth minute opener. Jonathan Greening was also in Mark Hughes’ side that day.

That victory put Roberto di Matteo’s team into fourth place in the Premier League table before a torrid run of results over the winter saw the Italian replaced by Roy Hodgson in February.

Despite the paucity of Baggies victories over the Cottagers in recent years, the west London side have only won at the Hawthorns once since they ended Albion’s FA Cup run in 2002 at the quarter-final stage. There have been five draws and three Albion victories in the nine meetings at the Shrine since then.

Fulham were the first Premier League side to lose to Albion when Darren Moore’s 48th minute goal was enough to secure the Baggies’ first points of the season on their return to the top flight on the last day of August 2002.

The Baggies’ record win over Fulham is 6-1, a feat they have achieved twice. The most recent was in a Division One fixture in September 1962 at the Hawthorns when Derek “The Tank” Kevan scored four and Keith Smith scored twice against a Cottagers’ defence that included future World Cup winner, George Cohen. The visitors were managed by the delightfully named Bedford Jezzard, the Cottagers’ boss for some six and a half seasons, who had re-signed Bobby Robson from Albion at the beginning of that season – he didn’t play in this match but not sure if there was any “gentleman’s agreement” as part of the transfer.

Fulham’s record victory at the Hawthorns has also been repeated. Their 4-2 win October 1959, also under Jezzard, was repeated on their next visit in August 1960.
