Sheffield United v West Brom – History and Statistics

On their first ever visit to Bramall Lane, in October 1893, Albion came away with the points thanks to goals from club legend, Billy Bassett, and William Neale. On their most recent visit, in December 2018, the Baggies also claimed victory with goals from Gareth Barry and Kieran Gibbs (pictured) enough to secure a 2-1 victory.

That is the latest in an excellent string of results for Albion at the home of the Blades. They have secured four wins in their last five visits dating back to 2001, including the infamous “Battle of Bramall Lane” in March 2002 and the subsequent trip in February 2004 when Darren Moore scored at both ends and Tommy Gaardsøe grabbed a late winner.

The Baggies haven’t bettered the 3-0 win in 2002 at Bramall Lane while the Blades’ best result in this fixture was only a few years before when Marcus Bent scored a hat trick in a thumping 6-0 win for the hosts in February 2000.

The 1990s saw a run of three victories for Albion at Bramall Lane in three successive seasons under three different managers. A 2-1 win under Alan Buckley in November 1996 was followed by another 2-1 win, this time under Ray Harford, the following season. A hat trick of victories was completed in April 1998 by which time Denis Smith was in charge – a brace from Lee Hughes plus goals from Andy Hunt and Kevin Kilbane saw the Baggies record a 4-2 victory, the only time they have scored four goals at that stadium.

Arguably the biggest game Albion have played at Bramall Lane did not involve Sheffield United. It was the venue for the FA Cup Final replay between Barnsley and the Baggies in 1912, a game that the Tykes won 1-0 in front of what was effectively a home crowd.
