Chelsea are one of eleven teams that have shared at least ten seasons in the Premier League with Albion, and they are the only one of them that the Baggies are yet to beat away from home. Albion’s last win at Stamford Bridge was some 27 years ago in November 1983 when a Garry Thompson goal was enough to see Ron Wylie’s side through to the fourth round of the League Cup.
The Baggies’ last league win at Chelsea was during their fantastic start to the 1978/79 season – Steve Wicks gave the hosts an early lead, but the visitors responded with goals from Cyrille Regis, John Wile and Bomber Brown. That put Albion in third place where they would end up finishing the season, and saw Chelsea drop to 21st place, one above the bottom place that they would occupy in May.
The closest the Baggies came to winning at the Bridge in the Premier League was in November 2013. Second half goals from Shane Long and Stéphane Sessègnon had seen Albion take the lead after Samuel Eto’o had given the hosts a first half lead. Deep into stoppage time, Ramires took a dive under challenge from Steven Reid (pictured) and referee, Andre Marriner, saw fit to award Chelsea a penalty. Eden Hazard converted to prolong Mourinho’s unbeaten home record in the Premier League.
The only other Premier League point that Albion have taken away from Stamford Bridge was for another 2-2 draw in January 2016 when James MacClean scored an equaliser with four minutes to go, a result which kept Tony Pulis’s side above Chelsea in the bottom half of the table.
The opening day of the 2010/11 season saw the Blues demolish a newly promoted Albion 6-0 with Didier Drogba notching a hat trick, but it isn’t Chelsea’s record win over the Baggies. That came fifty years earlier in December 1960 when the great Jimmy Greaves scored five as the hosts won 7-1 with Alec Jackson scoring the visitors’ consolation.
Albion’s record win at the Bridge was in December 1967 when goals from Clive Clark, Jeff Astle and Dick Krzywicki secured a 3-0 victory.
