History
Monday evening will be just the 25th meeting between the two Albions and only the third at the Amex Stadium. The Seagulls have moved stadium on three occasions since the Baggies last won at their place. After leaving the Goldstone Ground in 1997 spending two seasons ground-sharing with Gillingham at Priestfield, they moved to the Withdean athletics stadium which was their home for 12 years. They moved to the Amex Stadium in 2011.
Albion’s last win at Brighton was in a second division match in April 1990 when goals from Don Goodman, Tony Ford and Gary Bannister earned Brian Talbot’s side a 3-0 victory. That is the Baggies biggest win in Sussex with their three other successes all being by the odd goal. They won 1-0 in a Division Two fixture in September 1988, 2-1 in the Full Members’ Cup in 1985 and 2-1 in the last top flight meeting between the sides at the Goldstone Ground in August 1980 when Cyrille Regis and Gary Owen were on the scoresheet.
When the Baggies were relegated from the second tier for the first time in 1991, Brighton lost the Second Division Play-Off Final to Notts County but ended up following the Black Country Albion to the third tier just one season later. The 1992-93 campaign was the last season that the two clubs shared a division until Brighton were promoted to the Premier League in 2017.
