Albion’s Second Tier Season Comparison – 40 games

Wrexham’s first ever visit to the Hawthorns was an entertaining encounter and very much a game of two halves. The Baggies were the better side and went into the break with a 2-0 lead but the visitors came out much improved and it was all square just after the hour mark.

At that point, it looked as if Albion were rocking and, given how games have gone this season, you could be forgiven for thinking that a winner for Wrexham was inevitable. Mozza’s men recovered, however, and the last ten minutes was fairly end-to-end with substitutes Darryl Dike and Kieffer Moore both bringing decent saves out of the opposition goalkeeper, although both will feel they should have scored.

A point extends the Baggies’ unbeaten run to five games, their longest such run since Tony Mowbray’s team went six without defeat in February and March last year. Blackburn Rovers were the only one of Albion’s relegation rivals to win on Good Friday, with Leicester City, Portsmouth and Oxford United all drawing, leaving the table largely unchanged. Charlton Athletic’s home defeat to Roy Hodgson’s Bristol City means that they are still nervously glancing over their shoulder but one win from the last six should be good enough for them. A win for Mozza’s men on Easter Monday would move them ahead of Rovers, but that is not the only relegation six-pointer on Monday as Pompey face the U’s in a lunchtime kick-off. The Foxes will be hopeful of three points as they visit Hillsborough.

Premier League referee Rob Madley awarded Albion their first penalty kick of the campaign when Molumby was wrestled to the ground by Issa Kaboré, the Burkinabé international who also conceded the free kick that led to the opening goal. It is only the second spot kick that the Baggies have been awarded since the beginning of last season.

George Dobson was credited with the first goal, although Isaac Price’s free kick was on target, and then scored the equaliser in the second half becoming the first player to score at both ends against Albion since Kyle McFadzean did so when playing for Coventry City in the Baggies’ 2-1 win at the CBS Arena in December 2021.
