After a dozen league games without a victory, the Baggies finally won a match in 2026, and did so convincingly. With what was arguably their best performance of the season, Mozza’s Albion beat promotion-chasing Hull City 3-0 and in the process moved themselves out of the bottom three.
The opening goal was Josh Maja’s first goal since 1st October, and just his second of the season. Midway through the second half, his strike partner, Aune Heggebø, scored his ninth goal of the campaign, but his first since early December, while stoppage time saw Isaac Price net for the first time since January, his seventh of the season. James Morrison seems to have got the desired reaction from the players and the belief that the Baggies can get out of their current predicament is slowly growing.
Coming after draws against Sheffield United and Southampton, this win makes it three league games unbeaten – it is the first time that Albion have done that since the opening four matches of the campaign.
Only twice before has an Albion side had fewer points at this stage of a second tier campaign. In 1991, when the Baggies were relegated to the third tier for the only time (to date), they had 38 points from 38 games, while in 2000, Gary Megson’s team had only 39 points at the same stage – he had been in charge for only three games and hadn’t yet turned results around. Bobby Gould’s team earned a further ten points from the remaining eight matches but it proved not to be enough, while nine proved to be enough for Meggo’s men.
Who knows how many it will take this season – 50 points is normally considered to be enough, but Birmingham City were relegated in 2024 with 50 points. In fact, the record high for a relegated team in the second tier is 54 for Peterborough United in 2012/13 when Wolves also went down with 51 points. However, Reading stayed up with only 41 points in 2021/22 and several clubs have stayed up with as few as 44 points.
