A fourth defeat in five games, and a first at the Hawthorns since September, leaves the Baggies languishing in 16th place at the halfway point of the campaign. Ryan Mason’s team are getting very little luck at the moment, with another two decisions going against them in the defeat to Bristol City, but they are also not helping themselves with glorious chances missed once again.
Andrew Nestor’s pre-Christmas message seemed to confirm my suspicions that they will give Ryan Mason and his coaching team more time to get things right, but results will need to improve if Albion aren’t to be dragged into a relegation fight. It’s difficult to believe that Nestor and the club hierarchy will allow that to happen without acting.
It was the Baggies’ first home defeat on Boxing Day since Manchester City won 3-1 at the Hawthorns in 2014 with goals from Fernando, Touré and Silva for the visitors and Brown Ideye scoring for Albion. It was also the first such defeat in the second tier since the same club won 2-0 in Division One on Boxing Day 1999 with goals from Danny Granville and Shaun Goater.
