It was another disappointing after for Baggies fans after a hugely promising start that saw Aune Heggebø double his season’s goal tally with two poachers’ finishes that can only bode well for the rest of his campaign.
It was a match that was hugely impacted by Jayson Molumby’s red card and, while most acknowledge that the Irishman takes a significant portion of the blame for the result, Ryan Mason has still come in for a huge amount of criticism. Personally, I don’t blame Mason at all for the result. No coach should have to withdraw a senior player at half time because he has been booked, the player himself must take the responsibility to control his actions. As for the “controversial” decision to swap Johnston for Iling-Junior at half-time, it’s difficult to assess the tactical impact given the red card happened so soon after half-time, but I believe his reasons were sound. He has explained that they wanted at left-footer on the right side and were planning to play narrower in the second half; furthermore, having established a lead with two excellent contributions from Johnston, SIJ has more defensive attributes than MJ having played at full-back and wing-back extensively in his career and Johnston did watch Eccles wander in to the box unmarked for Coventry’s first goal with no reaction at all.
With many expecting a heavy defeat, that Albion took a two-goal lead was a positive albeit that it was squandered is anything but. Nonetheless, there are plenty of good things to take from the game, not least Heggebø’s brace, and hopefully the team can take some positivity into two crucial home games this week.
