Albion’s Second Tier Season Comparison – 19 games

There was no pot of gold at the end of the rainbow for the Baggies at Loftus Road on Saturday as they fell for a sixth successive away defeat. They remain without back-to-back victories this season – indeed, if the last time Albion won successive games in the same campaign was in September 2024!

Albion conceded late in a first half in which neither side impressed, but seemed to gain momentum at the start of the second before a dreadful mix-up between Styles and Mowatt led to a second for QPR. With Price coming on to replace Maja, the visitors regained the upper hand and reduced the arrears with a fine goal from Aune Heggebø. They looked the more likely to score as the game went on before another awful goal with Campbell and Wildsmith both at fault as Burrell scored his second.

Ryan Mason is obviously coming under pressure from the fans, but I still don’t think his future is being questioned by those who would have to make the call. It would be a financially expensive decision and any new appointment represents a risk. Moreover, I think there is an understanding that the squad is still in the process of being rebuilt and it is nowhere near good enough to challenge for promotion as it stands right now. Another head coach might get more out of the players, but that is no guarantee. I may be wrong, but I would be surprised if Mason was sacked unless the threat of relegation becomes real. Despite being in the bottom half of the table, Albion are still closer to the top six (5 points) than the bottom three (8 points).

It doesn’t get any easier for the Baggies this week as they face two of the form sides in the division this week at Southampton and at home to Sheffield United ahead of the hectic Christmas period. Results obviously need to improve before the end of the year else it won’t just be the fans calling for Mason’s head.
